Q: what foods should I avoid in order to get my cholesterol under control?
heart disease runs in the family and I cannot afford to buy medication
A: Avoid saturated fats and cholesterol. Eat only lean meats and then only sparingly. Avoid egg yolks, mayonnaise, bacon, hydrogenated vegetable oils (like Crisco shortening.) If you must use an oil, consider canola (rapeseed) oil for cooking. Peanut oil is a good second choice and sustains higher temperatures. Of course, butter, cream, and whole milk are also sources of saturated fats and cholesterol. The list grows rather long, but I think you get the idea. Your doctor can give you a much longer list of foods to avoid.
An inexpensive cholesterol lowering drug is Niacin. It is limited in its use because many people who take high doses complain of flushing. Talk this over with your doctor. It involves taking very high doses, not like those found in multivitamins. If you do not have the flushing, or can tolerate it, it can be a safe, effective, and very inexpensive drug to lower cholesterol. Always seek the advice of your doctor before beginning such megadose vitamin therapies.
Hope this helps.
Q: What can I do to reduce my blood pressure and cholesterol without taking medication?
I am 29 years old. I am overweight and have high blood pressure and cholesterol.
I am about to embark on a journey to better health. I want to be around to see my great-grandchildren. Staying this way will not get me there.
I already have plans to lose weight by eating healthier and resumimg my excersice routine.
I’m cutting a lot of salt from my diet too.
We only buy fish and chicken and have stopped eating out almost entirely. My family is in the process of going natural too, but cannot totally afford it…. Have you seen the price of organic chicken?
I am open to any suggestions you may have including exercise regimens and diet plans. I do not want to take any medications, but am willing to look into herbal supplements.
A: whew glad you are willing to look at herbal supps. I was about to post some here before fully reading the question.
Sounds like you have the diet and exercise down.
I found these Herbs for reducing Blood Pressure
I will have to look at cholesterol later.. I gotta go get my daughter.
Sorry for the lengthy response.
Experts have extracted number of plants for various herbs for lowering blood pressure. Some of them are following:
*
100 mg Hawthorne
This herb keeps healthy blood flow while promoting stronger contractions of the heart. Hawthrone also helps in workouts without exhaustion.
*
100 mg. coleus forskolii
This herb has been in use for 2000 years for cardiovascular health and to improving heart pumping.
*
100 mg. olive leaf extract
Researchers have discovered a substance in olive leaf called oleuropein which can promote oxidation of bad cholesterol.
*
50 mg. odorless garlic
This herb keeps blood from becoming sticky and forming platelets. It is used by millions of people who have hypertension and cholesterol concerns.
*
B vitamins( b-6 b-12) and folic acid
These essential vitamins protect the lining of your arteries keeping them flexible while fighting arteriosclerosis and supporting heart health.
*
Blue berries
One favorite solution for fighting cholesterol levels is eating lots of blueberries. Blueberries have now been proven to be more effective than statin drugs in reducing cholesterol levels, and yet they absolutely no negative side effects. You can get blueberries throughout the year if you go to the right stores.
High-rite and aqua-rite
High-Rite comes is a capsule and contains herbs which have been carefully selected to balance and regulate blood pressure and also to address some of the factors which may be causing it.
While some of the ingredients in High-Rite specifically target blood vessels which have become constricted, others improve the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively, while treating and preventing plaque build up in the arteries.
In addition to these properties, High-Rite also helps to reduce stress and boost the body’s ability to fight illness.

Q: Does he buy me chocolates because he loves me or because he wants me to get fatter and fatter?
http://s448.photobucket.com/albums/qq203/Witchonbroom/
I never had a weight problem.. but I am on medication which are not at all good for me but I do need some medication against my supposedly GAD.. which in my case manifests itself not in anxiety I can ever sense.. I don’t feel anxious but if I don’t take my medication I suffer severest chest pains.. and I had seen all the doctors..pneumonoligists etc.. and my heart and lungs are sound.. that leaves only GAD as I also had my stomach checked.. for possible problems there.. nothing and I went to Newport Beach in California in 2002.. with my husband.. they did a full body scan on both of us and found less wrong with me than with my husband.. both of our problems were minor.. that is a scan that shows the heart arteries.. so angioplasty is not necessary and one sees right away if the arteries are clear.. free from plaque… as one can get from high cholesterol or high blood pressure.. so my chest pain must be due to muscle spasms of the diaphragm..
I gained weight since I went on these new pills…because they make me feel too tired to exercise.. now my husband buys me chocolate and i never had weight problems before.. but when I know there is chocolate in the fridge I can’t resist and I eat the whole lot at once.. feels like a 3 minute satisfaction.. about as great as an orgasm.. but afterwards I feel a lot of guilt.. tastes great.. but then I have more to lose… on these pictures above.. I was slim.. medication can reduce the ability to want to exercise.. as it can make someone tired.. perhaps it also increases appetite.. I always did love chocolate but in the past I was on the go all the time and never gained extra weight.. because I was physically active a lot.
I guess I buy him a whole lot of dark chocolate for Valentines day…and hope I get none from him…
He tells me it’s my choice but he is the one who buys the chocolate and knows I can’t resist temptation.. I never had strong willpower when it came to chocolate..he knows that…Does he want to rename me into Nellie the Elephant?
I guess this is my theme song now..

I am 46.. we have been married since May 1988…
May I add that I have been suffering from this condition for the past 16 years.. and no.. I don’t blame my husband for the weight gain at all. I have a diaphragm that goes into spasm which feels like a heart attack. until 2007 I weighed 110 lbs at age 44 and I was on anti anxiety meds but if you need to stay on meds to take away severe chest pain and difficulty breathing when your diaphragm contracts.. over any lenght of time you develop a tolerance towards your anti anxiety meds and need a larger dose.. in my case I am on my old meds which worked great for 4 years.. since 2007 I am on Effexor as well.. only since then did I gain weight and only since then have I felt tired too tired to exercise.. I want to talk to my doctor about an alternative but we have not enough doctors as it is.. I have to go to a doctor out of town.. not a local one and I have no car. Our city is on bus strike until the unforeseeable future..I have nothing wrong with my stomach. The meds must be wrong for me.
I will definitely tell my physician when I see him next. which should be in early April.. I have to rely on public transport. I live in the capital of Canada but our city is on bus strike and has been since Nov. 10th.. until.. when is not sure. The union and bus drivers have unreasonable demands, the city tried to accommodate them. Now they want even more. The city says no and I agree..Otherwise they go on strike whenever they want.. If you had chest pain on a rate from 1 to 10 if you did not take medication and without this medication the pain was an 8 or a 10 you would take meds also.. this is not a question of wanting.. a question of being able to lead a bearable life.. a life I can find worthwhile living which I did not when I was without medication and unfortunately in some cases medication is the only answer to some psychosomatic problems… I talk to him about the Effexor causing a lot of problems.. and that I want to get off them.. and try something else when I see him.
I am not a junk food eater at all. I do eat chocolate.. but not every day.. it’s the lack of exercise mainly.. due to fatigue which comes from my new medication.. Effexor.. which is something I would not recommend to anyone.. I eat a lot of fruit and not much meat.. I have a healthy diet otherwise.. I never eat junk food and I don’t feel like junk either . thank you for your input however.
I do understand all of you.. you think I sit here and eat and eat junk all day long and that I eat way above my calorie intake allows for my height .. I don’t .. I don’t eat a lot of food.. I gained the weight not because I eat 2 bars of chocolate every week or 3 bars.. I gain it because I stopped exercising and that I try hard to pick up again.. but here my medication is making me tired.. I don’t eat other junk food at all .. so it’s the exercise that is lacking not what I eat.. and I addressed the doctor about the Effexor last time.. I told them that I believe they are wrong for me. I can’t pick and choose my doctor.. I have to get the message across to him that this medication is not helpful.. on the other hand I do need medication against GAD because I went through hell with my symptoms 16 years ago.. when I could not take a breath and had chest pain like in a heart attack but it lasted for days.. never stopped.. and all tests proved it was not the heart or lungs nor the stomach..
So without the medication I was unable to function … my muscles were all in spasm.. I lived like that for years..still going out but not enjoying life and then when I got medication which helped me.. I went and took a training course and worked as a health care worker because I can relate to what it is like to suffer pain.. and that people don’t want pity.. only compassion and to be treated with dignity.. for that reason I believe I did a good job as a health care worker…My husband is not controlling.. I know he loves me.. he knows when it comes to chocolate I have no self discipline but show me the person who does not have any weak points.. well mine is chocolate.. we all have weaknesses and strengths..nobody is perfect.. when I was 40 I was slim… 110 lbs..too thin I was then on the low side of what was acceptable for my BMI..
A: He probably doesn’t know what else to buy you… men are so lame when it comes to buying their wife a gift! Our culture is food oriented, I am sure he is not trying to fatten you up He probably doesn’t even notice the few extra pounds.
Q: how long are prescriptions good for ?
In other words, how long can I use a prescription after it was written ?
Do they “expire” or what ?
I take blood pressure & cholesterol medication regularly but use Zoloft & Xanax on an as needed basis.
So if I get a script for both Zoloft & Xanax today, are they both still good to use a year from now ?
Just curious as I have plenty of both and my Dr makes me go back every 6 months and he gives me more.
If I had him leave off the Zoloft & Xanax, how long until past unused scripts were invalid ?
Thanks.
PS, I have a similar question I will ask here too.
Im going to buy some eye drops overseas because they are cheap, however, i will need to dilute them. My question is how & with what ?
I was thinking either Alaway or tears and I was thinking a needle if they are available to the general public. (open to other suggestions)
Specifically, my Dr wants me to take Alrex but they are $80-90. I can get its stronger parent drops for roughly 70% less overseas, but will have to dilute them on my own, somehow.
I will need these drops for the long term so I have to find an affordable solution.
Thanks !
A: scripts do expire, its usually good for one year on the written date, so if you got the script on june 1, 2010 then it expires june, 1 2011. it also depends on where you get the script. emergency room scripts are good for 72 hours. your dr wants you to see him every six months for a check up. if you still need the meds or the dose need to be higher and all that. all past unused are still good for one year after written date, no matter if you use it or not.
Q: High Blood Pressure & Cholesterol?
My mother is 47 years old, VERY active (works out everyday) found out she has high blood pressure about 150/80, and cholesterol reading of 312. We have been trying to watch what she eats as much as possible, because her doctor wanted to see if it would drop if she changed her diet around before he prescribes her medication. We have been shopping at Trader Joe’s, and basically buying all the organic stuff (no more processed stuff). My question is, she eats stuff still that contains sodium such as granola bars, unsalted pretzels, cereal, yogurt..etc. Is this OK? I figued it was just as long as she doesn’t ADD salt to her food. All of our dinners have tasted very, well, BLAH. Please let me know if I am dong the right thing, allowing her to still eat sodium, just as long as its not added salt? Thanks so much.
By the way, she is only 130 lbs! & very tall
A: The diet you are following and the work (exercise) she is doing everyday is good to lower your mother’s blood pressure and high cholesterol.
It’s true that sodium tends to raise blood pressure. If you allow your mother to eat foods that have “natural-sodium” non added ones, it’s ok. But if the foods contain added-sodium, then problems will come out.
Remember that a low salt low fat diet and foods are great for your mother.
Q: Weight gainer 2200??
A few weeks ago, my mom was diagnosed with gastroparesis- slow emptying stomach. It has made her VERY sick, and she’s taking medicine to work itself out. She went hypothyroid, and changed her synthroid dosgage and is back to normal thyroid levels- so naturally her stomach is adjusting and getting better because of this.
My question is, over the last two months she has lost her appetite and a significant amount of weight because of the diagnosis (and a severe bought of depression from all of this).
She is 5′5” 112 lbs (usually she is around 127lbs). She can’t put on weight because she doesn’t eat much (plus her metab. is high). I suggested weight gainer 2200 because she can drink an 8oz glass and have more than enough calories, and start putting on weight rather quickly, so she can get some energy back and stop fretting about being so thin.
I guess I need to know if this is safe?
She takes synthroid for not having a thyroid
she has high cholesterol (takes medication for it)
she currently started taking celexa for depression
she was taking reglan for her slow stomach but it was causing other issues and she stopped- soon she will be taking domperidone.
she takes xanax 2-3 times a day (which alleviates depression caused nausea until the celexa kicks in.
I need to know if it’s ok to have this many calories and this much protein/nutrition in one drink. I say too much nutrition- because is it possible that the body could go into “shock” from 200% of your daily need of Niacin, for example, when you previously had next to none in your system?
A: too much niacin wont cause problems… its a water soluable vitamin, meaning that once you reach 100% of your daily value, you just pee the rest out. it isnt stored in your body so no harmful effects… but vitamins A D E and K are fat-soluable, and you can have side affects from having too much of those
ive never heard of weight gainer 2200, but i would check to see the vitamin levels of those vitamins…
Q: My dad is a stubborn diabetic?
My dad was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of years ago. He takes 2 metformin pills twice a day plus cholesterol and blood pressure medication. He lost his health insurance since his new job as a security guard doesn’t offer it and goes to a clinic. It really worries me that he doesn’t watch what he eats. He’s overweight and is not motivated to go to the gym (that we pay for without using) and continues to eat sweets and whatever else he wants. I’ve tried to talk to him and hide things and not buy unhealthy food but he doesn’t listen. I want him to be there for me later in life and I’m worried this won’t happen. Any advice please?
A: Advertise for a new dad !!!I take it you will in the end be the caretaker. Am I right. That in tails driving him to dialysis, being his seeing eye dog, pushing him in the wheelchair.
He is just going on his merry way , while you fret about him.
I would tell him once , and never mention it again.
He needs a low glycemic index diet . http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm
This table includes the glycemic index and glycemic load of more than 2,480 individual food items. Not all of them, however, are available in the United States. They represent a true international effort of testing around the world.
The glycemic index (GI) is a numerical system of measuring how much of a rise in circulating blood sugar a carbohydrate triggers–the higher the number, the greater the blood sugar response. So a low GI food will cause a small rise, while a high GI food will trigger a dramatic spike. A list of carbohydrates with their glycemic values is shown below. A GI is 70 or more is high, a GI of 56 to 69 inclusive is medium, and a GI of 55 or less is low.
The glycemic load (GL) is a relatively new way to assess the impact of carbohydrate consumption that takes the glycemic index into account, but gives a fuller picture than does glycemic index alone. A GI value tells you only how rapidly a particular carbohydrate turns into sugar. It doesn’t tell you how much of that carbohydrate is in a serving of a particular food. You need to know both things to understand a food’s effect on blood sugar. That is where glycemic load comes in. The carbohydrate in watermelon, for example, has a high GI. But there isn’t a lot of it, so watermelon’s glycemic load is relatively low. A GL of 20 or more is high, a GL of 11 to 19 inclusive is medium, and a GL of 10 or less is low.
Foods that have a low GL almost always have a low GI. Foods with an intermediate or high GL range from very low to very high GI.
Both GI and GL are listed here. The GI is of foods based on the glucose index–where glucose is set to equal 100. The other is the glycemic load, which is the glycemic index divided by 100 multiplied by its available carbohydrate content (i.e. carbohydrates minus fiber) in grams. (The “Serve size (g)” column is the serving size in grams for calculating the glycemic load; for simplicity of presentation I have left out an intermediate column that shows the available carbohydrates in the stated serving sizes.) Take, watermelon as an example of calculating glycemic load. Its glycemic index is pretty high, about 72. According to the calculations by the people at the University of Sydney’s Human Nutrition Unit, in a serving of 120 grams it has 6 grams of available carbohydrate per serving, so its glycemic load is pretty low, 72/100*6=4.32, rounded to 4.
And he must exercise. DAILY!!!!!
That’s all you can do . He is being very selfish. It’s a shame we can’t pick our relations.
Good luck to you

Q: Odorless garlic supplements Natures Bounty 1000mg?
I just bought a bunch of Garlic supplements cheap. Like 1.25 cents each for 1000.
I have high blood pressure & cholesterol and take medication for both.
I know regular garlic is better but that’s not happening.
The directions say 1 per day. Would anyone suggest more ?
If I take 1 per day, the last 7-8 months worth will be expired. Not a big deal, probably just lose a little potentcy. And it might even be better since its “aged”.
For 1.25 cents each, I figure it cant hurt & might help. Agree ? Disagree ?
Odorless Garlic 1000 mg. # 012326
Odorless Garlic softgels provide 1000 mg (Allium sativum)(from 10 mg Garlic Oil Concentrate)(equivalent to 1000 mg of fresh Garlic Bulb). Garlic promotes heart and cardiovascular health and helps maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range.* Our specialized cold processing method preserves the natural goodness while reducing the odor. Adults can take one (1) softgel daily with meals.
A: Many of these capsules are mainly vegetable oil with a trace of garlic oil.
Just eat garlic if you want to get it into your system.
Q: I need help determining the sickness I might have. What could it be?
I really need help determining what’s wrong. I’m 16, 5″2, and I am very well in shape. I exercise and get my 9 hours of sleep, all that jazz.
I wasn’t born with any disorders or health defects other than ADHD.
I take 30mg of Dexedrine capsule to help me focus when needed, which is only once every few days. I have never experienced anything negative while on the medication.
I don’t have high cholesterol. I have a pretty decent immune system,
and it is extremely rare that I ever get this sick.
Tonight, I walked to the movie rental place with my buddy. After about 10 minutes of looking around, I started to feel odd.
I was sweating like crazy and my body felt like a furnace.
It wasn’t anxiety.
It only worsened within the next 5 minutes or so,
and I started feeling like I wasn’t getting enough oxygen no matter
how deeply I breathed.
I decided to sit outside of the store and wait for him.
I didn’t feel too much better but the fresh air was relieving.
When he came out of the store we walked about a block away to the
mall so we could buy a movie from HMV.
After being in HMV for a few minutes I started feeling sweaty again with the same feeling of overheating.
However it was much worse, and my vision started getting a bit blurry.
It felt like my insides kept getting hotter and the hotter I got the more blurry my vision was.
It was average temperature in the building.
I started to feel really dizzy and eventually nauseous.
After my bud bought the movie I told him I needed to go outside. A few seconds after being outside I gagged but didn’t puke. I sat down on a ledge and my stomach started feeling really sick.
At the same time that my stomach was feeling sick, (like the kind of sick when you have a stomach flu), My left leg was also feeling very sick, it’s difficult to explain. Around my knee felt painful but also like there was a stomach ache in my knee.
Pain started bugging me a bit in random places only on my left side.
I still felt nauseous but didn’t puke or anything because I felt that if I was to puke, I wouldn’t be able to walk back home.
My bud called someone to pick us up and bring us back, and now we’re at home, but I still feel nauseous and like I can’t breathe,
and my leg and stomach are still having the weird sick feeling. I don’t have a headache but I did have an eye ache just before we walked to the video store.
This is all accompanied by a fever.
What really worries me is that when I feel this sick, I sometimes have seizures (I am not epileptic though). I really don’t want that to happen especially since my mother is not home right now.
This is what I need help with:
-Does anybody know of any possible explanation for these symptoms?
-What else should I be looking for?
A: You need to measure your body temperature, sounds like a fever and if your body temperature exceeds 104 Fahrenheit you can risk brain damage.
Wikipedia has an entry about excessive body temperature – fever of unknown origin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperpyrexia
You might have mononucleosis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mononucleosis
Infectious mononucleosis (mono)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infectious_mononucleosis
Or sepsis:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septicemia
This one is extremely serious, sepsis is a general term for a whole-body inflammation.
Septicemia is the term for blood poisoning.
This can kill you, this requires emergency medical response.
If this is what you have, your youth and strength are keeping you alive for now, but you can’t recover on your own, this kind of illness attacks all the organs in the body at the same time.
Have someone take you to an emergency room.
Q: Please, how do I stop binging?!?!?
I’m obese and I cant suppress my eating habits. My doctor said I have high cholesterol, triglycerides and my creatinine levels are bad because of my obesity. I had to begin taking a medication for another condition I have, but the doctor said she wont take the risk (I cannot exercise because of it or go out in the sun). I have been gaining weight recently and I cant stop overeating and binging. I always end every diet with a huge binge (even though i do see results and i do lose weight) and then I end up even more depressed. The doctor said I need to lose weight and stop eating animal products, but my family doesnt support me at all (Im 17 and weight 108 kg) and they keep buying these foods and I cant resist but eat them (they are obese too). Most of the time the only vegetables they buy are lettuce and zucchini. I have been obese since my parents opened a restaurant (no longer ours) when I was 4 and they say it’s my fault for being like this and dont take any responsibility for not educating me about choosing the right foods when I was little. Now its much harder to change these habits. I feel like Im always going to be obese. i always eat when im not hungry, im usually bored and depressed or angry when i eat and there is no way to stop, its just impossible… i dont even know what i should do about this, any suggestions?
I have been gaining weight at an alarming speed recently (9 kg in 2 months) and Im scared of getting diabetes but i cant stop eating!!
((
A: Get a trainer and a nutritionist. Listen to them. What you do is called a slow death. Stop it.
Q: High Blood Pressure! Need Healthy Recipes (No Salt! Please) …..?
Here’s the deal. I’m a Fedex Express courier. I’m on road about 10 hours a day and I tend to eat whatever I find on road that’s cheap. (.99 chicken sandwiches)
I need to get away from that.
I’m told that processed foods have salt and other nasty goodies that are not good for me … deli meats/sandwiches and prepackaged stuff you can buy at 7-11.
I love sandwiches but I don’t eat cheese because I was told the cholesterol will clog my arteries. Ok … no more cheese …
I drink so much water I’m still bloated when I get home … but I also drink diet coke.
I take my medication but it doesn’t really help. My opinion of course.
Any ideas for taking a lunch on road with me? Something that hopefully doesn’t take a long time to cook/prepare?
Thanks and thumbs up to all who answer! Just give me time to get back and read the answers.
A: My boyfriend has just been put on blood pressure medication so I am also on the lookout for any great recipe sites! I found this one and it has a BUNCH of yummy looking recipes (including cheesecake AND macaroni!) It also has the nutritional breakdown and dietician tips on each recipe. Hope it helps

Q: Strange symptoms – me (56 yr old woman) Heart Issues? Does anyone have any knowledge?
Yesterday afternoon at the same moment my daughter told me some not too good news (we were in a shopping center and her 4 yr old son had just had a chest x ray that turned out to be not very good) I started getting pain in the middle of my chest I thought hmm its because I have just driven 3hrs to get to the radiologist and I am stressed and having muscle spasm so I bought a bottle of water and took some strong pain killers which helped. When we drove back home (another 3 hrs I took more pain killers and went to bed not perturbed because I thought it was tension from my neck which I did have tension in. In the middle of the night I was aware briefly of some pain in my left arm and actually thought and dismissed heart problem? Waking up this morning still had the pain took more pain killers but now I have indigestion which although I take medication for (prescription) every morning I was suprised when it didn’t work so took another 20mg and then later an over the counter med for indigestion. Now pain is pretty much gone but I am having a strange sensation happening in both my jaws just below ears. I am thinking what the hell is going on if anything is this just full on stress reaction? I could make an appointment to see an after hrs doctor tonight but don’t want to obviously be taken for a hypochondriac so I am wondering if anyone can give me their ideas I realize no one is a doctor but if this series of events had happened over the past 24hrs or so to someone else out there what would they be thinking? Because I figured heart attack pain is sudden but doesn’t last as long as the pain I had I am reluctant also to go to the doctor. Any ideas welcomed. PS I am 56 yrs old on meds for hypertension annoying irregular heart beat and cholesterol lowering meds which do the job.
A: Number one, you should not take any pain killers if something like this happens. The most you should take is asprin which will help thin your blood in case it is a heart problem. You should call 911 or get to the ER and let them check you out especially since you have hypertension. Also with you having pain in your jaws and sick to your stomach you should not play around with that at all.
What are you waiting for? This could save your life. If nothing else it would ease your fear if it isn’t a heart problem but I wouldn’t play around. Get help now!!!
Good Luck!

Help! I need advice with my husbands condition!?
My husband is schizophrenia and bipolar he is on medications.
He is also a walking time bomb with High blood pressure very high cholesterol and triglycerides. The doctor can not put him on medicines for his cholesterol because of his high liver function.
He is just miserable with this new diet and is complaining that its hard. He is Mexican and always eaten very bad fattening foods. And ever since he stopped using drugs he was doing good for 3 years and then we drank alcohol and well now he is just wanting cigarettes and alcohol and is acting like A kid! I know the voices don’t help him. They tell him what to do and bug him but He begs me for money and if I don’t give it to him he will look for change.

I already called him the doctor wont be in tomorrow but they will get a hold of him.
A: I’m glad you called the doctor. he may need a medication change. My husband is also schizophrenic and I have been through you know what. My husband also drank a lot when the meds weren’t working well. I have gotten a lot of help on the NAMI web site. That is the national alliance for mental illness. I ask questions all the time and get really good answers and advice. I am now also taking family to family classes sponsored by NAMI. They are free and teach you so much and help you with many problems. Please don;t give up. There is help out there.

A: You truly need some type of support system or counseling. have you tried your church if you go, or a counseling service with a sliding scale (based on your income), for help.
Q: High BP? If measured High on first reading, then after sitting 10-15minutes it lowers.?
Whenever I go to the doctor, I’m told I have High BP.
I have bought a home monitoring device for home,
for I want do make sure if I really do have high BP verses Having High BP just at the office.
Well, I take it at home. I take it when I first sit down….it’s high…5 minutes later, it lowers…in about 10 minutes time of continously sitting…it’s in the 120’s/70’s. I’ve done this several times, and for the most part this is the case.
So if my blood pressure only rises when I am up and about doing things, should or shouldn’t I concider I have High Bood pressure . I don’t want to be started on medication if I don’t really need to.
To add. I do have high, but not that high of, fasting LDL, My HDL is good though. Don’t know if this is a factor for what I mentioned above.
I don’t know much about blood pressure/cholesterol. Been educationing myself reading through the internet. Just haven’t came across an article to answer my question about active vs sitting BP.
A: Good for you for taking charge of your situation. Home monitoring is a good way to determine your BP. By taking readings over a period of time, say a couple of weeks, you can average the results and show this to you doctor.
